Winchfield Canal Walk

Hampshire || Tags: , ||

3.6 miles

Some details about the route:

TERRAIN: canal paths and fields

SUITABLE FOR PUSHCHAIRS OR WHEELCHAIR: Possibly but would be difficult due to the terrain

CAR PARKING: There is a car parking at The Barley Mow pub or a public car park just opposite on Sprats Hatch Lane

AMENITIES: There is a pub at the start/finish but other than that, this is set in the countryside so there is nothing along the route. Hartley Wintney and Hook are a short drive and have plenty of amenities such as shops, garages and pubs and cafes

ABOUT THE ROUTE/WALK:  Quiet, countryside walk. The canal can get busy with other walkers, cyclists and runners. Just something to be aware of as they can make you jump when they seem to appear from nowhere. Canoeist are sometimes on the canal, which some dog like to chase

It starts at the Barley Mow/Basingstoke Canal and heads down Sprats Hatch Lane, which goes past The Old Hatch. There is a right turn which will take you across the canal and then head up along the canal. There is a left turn to take you around the fields but if you are not confident about this, or see any signs, you can continue up the canal back to the start

TIPS: It’s a shortish route so nothing to be concerned about but if you’re not confident about knowing where to go, you could just walk along the canal and back again

    Is there road work involved in this, or all off lead? From the photo I’m assuming some road work until you hit the canal, then off lead until you hit the road at the end again?
